Don't get me wrong.
I want my children to grow up to be self sufficient.
I do believe that as teen-agers, they should be capable of doing their laundry, cleaning their room, and yes, making their own sandwiches.
Recently, I have learned that even though they can physically make their own lunch, sometimes they still need me to slather on the peanut butter and jelly on their sliced bread.
.
Our last two children at home were adopted as pre-schoolers from South Korea. Because of their age at adoption, I was not part of their first feedings. I didn't make bottles of warmed milk for them. I still believe they not only know that, but they feel it.
I do too.
And so, when my very capable, independent minded, sixteen year old asks me to make her a sandwich. I do. Why? Because it's not a need of her body, but of her heart.
